RCD protection Residual current device
Having your circuits RCD protected drastically minimizes the risk of electric shock. As a rule of thumb all electrical circuits should be RCD protected unless the installer has made a judgement for instance fire alarms, and these circuits should be tested, maintained and logged at more regular intervals
Testing Intervals
Domestic
Every 5 years / change of tenancy. New builds can sometimes have a 10 year intervals until there first test and inspection from once its first built. The testing intervals will be determined by the inspector/tester as test readings may not be perfect. You will find the test sticker on the fuse board, along with a date of when it was lasted tested and when the next test is due.
Commercial
Every 3 years / change of tenancy / change of use. The testing intervals will be determined by the inspector/tester as test reading may not be perfect. You will find the test sticker on the fuse board, along with a date of when it was lasted tested and when the next test is due.
Recessed lighting being fire-rated
Recessed light fittings must have a minimum 90-minute fire-rated if the is an inhabitable room above. This issue can also be overcome with the use of fire hoods.
IP ratings for certain zones
Bathroom light fittings should have an IP rating of at least IP44. Most shower lights have an IP rating of IP65. You should not be able to touch the light bulb in a bathroom fitting.
Power Cuts
Most of the United Kingdom is run on a 3 phase supply. If there is a power cut in your area it may only effect 1 in 3 houses.
How to check a fuse from a plug or fused spur without a tester.
Remove the fuse you want to test and hold one end of it. Then, try using your smartphone by touching with the other end. If your phone remains unresponsive, the fuse is likely blown. However, if your phone reacts (e.g., screen wakes up or charging is interrupted), the fuse is still functional.
